5 new COVID-19 cases recorded in Guyana

The Ministry of Public Health has recorded five confirmed cases of COVID-19 taking the total to 109. This is inclusive of 10 deaths and 36 recoveries.

Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence in her update to the nation disclosed that over the weekend seven cases were recorded and an additional five on Monday, May 11, 2020.

Among the new cases, is the first such for the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region.

To date, 930 persons have been tested with 821 of those tested returning negative.

Currently, six patients are housed in the COVID-19 ICU at GPHC, with one intubated. six. There are 62 persons in isolation at various facilities across Guyana.

Minister Lawrence disclosed initially an analysis done by PAHO in March had projected 1,400 cases locally. However, a further study in April revealed that if no measures were implemented Guyana would have 20,000 cases.

This she reiterated was the reason for the stay-at-home advisory among other measures being activated.

“Unless we exercise caution and adhere to the control measures, the model figures of 1,400 and 20,000 can become a reality,” Lawrence warned.
