Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded its first death from Ebola in the eastern city of Butembo, health officials announced on 85 people have died from the epidemic since July. 39 others hjave been infected.

Butembo’s mayor Sylvain Kanyamanda said the victim was a woman who was likely infected as a result of participating in an unsafe burial.

Kanyamanda has called on the population to exercise caution and to respect all hygiene measures recommended by health workers.

Health officials say they’ve made progress slowing the virus’s spread with experimental vaccines and treatments. However, they cannot be sure the situation is under control due to difficulties accessing some areas.
