Hurricane Florence strengthens on its way to U.S. east coast

The U.S. Southeast is bracing for hurricane Florence- the most powerful storm to threaten the Carolinas in nearly three decades.

Forecasters say, the Category 4 storm is expected to strengthen and could make landfall by Thursday, near Wilmington, North Carolina.

Officials say there is a chance of “life-threatening inundation from rising water” over the next 48 hours and more than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate their homes.

Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, North and South Carolina have all declared states of emergency.
