Merlene Ottey’s grandmother funeral halts owing to new COVID-19 measures

The alarming rate of increase in Jamaica’s COVID-19 cases saw government putting a halt on funeral services, while allowing burials under strict protocols.

The ban has affected the funeral service for Jamaica-born sprint legend Merlene Ottey’s grandmother, 107-year-old Blanche Bowen.

Commenting on the situation, Ottey told the Jamaica Star that it is a big blow for her and her family as they flew to Jamaica and stayed in quarantine for the service, which was slated to be held on Saturday.

Daughter of the deceased, Joan Bowen-Ottey said although they weren’t planning a big funeral, they had zoom set up for those overseas and who couldn’t be there.
