A source close to the singer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly, told The Associated Press on Monday that Franklin is seriously ill. No more details were provided.
Franklin cancelled planned concerts earlier this year after she was ordered by her doctor to stay off the road and rest up.
The 76 icon last performed at a benefit concert organized by Elton John in November.
Last year, she also announced her plans to retire, saying she would perform at “some select things.”
Franklin, the daughter of the famous pastor and civil rights activist C. L. Franklin, was born in Memphis, Tennesse in 1942.
She has the third-most Grammy Awards for any female artist in history.
