Bill to cut Toronto council size passed

The size of Toronto city council has officially been cut from 47 to 25 seats.

Ontario government passed a controversial bill Tuesday, paving the way for the cut to happen.

The legislation was unexpectedly announced in late July- three months before municipal election on October 22.

Some critics argued that the new government’s move to cut the number of city council seats was not in keeping with the democratic process.

In reacting to the passage of Bill 5, Toronto Mayor John Tory said city council will be meeting on August 20 to review their legal options.
