Veteran dancehall artiste Capleton has two projects in the running for Grammy consideration this year. He is featured on the compilation album Reggae Diaries Vol 1, which includes the track This is How We Roll, a collaboration with Buju Banton and BL The Hook Slaya.
The album has been submitted in the Best Reggae Album category, while the single has been put forward for Best Global Music Performance.
This isn’t new territory for the Jah Jah City singer, who was previously nominated for Best Reggae Album for his solo project Still Blazing. He was also a featured artiste on Damian Marley’s Grammy-winning Halfway Tree album.
Capleton isn’t surprised by the album’s submission for Grammy consideration. Reflecting on the project, he said, “It’s a great album, and having Buju Banton and I together on a track is exciting for our fans. The compilation features various artists, but I can speak to the strength of my collaboration with Buju. He’s very relevant right now, especially with his U.S. tour, and our song brings a 90s vibe to a modern dancehall beat.”
When asked how he feels about the potential Grammy nod, Capleton was philosophical. “I don’t make music with awards in mind. My focus is on creating music that uplifts and strengthens people. The Grammy is an industry recognition, and I’ll go with whatever my peers decide. There are other local awards coming up too, so it’s all good.”
Reflecting on his year so far, Capleton described it as both busy and rewarding. “After headlining City Splash in England and closing out Reggae Sumfest, I had a successful return of my show, A St Mary Mi Come From. I’ve also performed across the Caribbean and the United States. My next big show is Reggae Love Fest at the Barclays Center in New York this November,” he shared. “I’m hoping to end the year on a high note because it’s already been a very special one for me, and I’m extremely grateful.”
