Roston Chase has been named the new captain of the West Indies Test team, with fellow Barbadian Jomel Warrican appointed vice-captain. The official announcement was made by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in a media release on May 16, following reports by multiple online news agencies earlier that day.

Chase, 33, takes the reins from Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down after a three-year tenure. His first assignment as captain will be the “WI Home: Full Ah Energy” series against world number one Australia, starting June 25 at Kensington Oval in Barbados. West Indies are currently ranked eighth in the ICC Men’s Test Team standings.
The appointments of Chase and Warrican were unanimously approved by the CWI Board of Directors during its meeting on May 16.
CWI described the selection process as “groundbreaking, robust and structured,” marking a significant shift in how leadership roles are filled. The board emphasized the importance of leadership in shaping team culture, improving performance, and securing long-term success. To that end, a data-informed, multi-dimensional framework guided the captaincy selection.
A shortlist of candidates was drawn based on Test experience, leadership potential, and overall captaincy credentials. Final contenders included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Chase, and Warrican. Current ODI and T20I captain Shai Hope was also considered but respectfully declined in order to focus on his existing leadership duties.
Candidates underwent a comprehensive evaluation process that included psychometric assessments to analyze leadership style, behavioral traits, and suitability for the role. They also participated in structured interviews to assess tactical acumen, communication skills, and alignment with team values.
The interview panel consisted of head coach Daren Sammy, CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, and Enoch Lewis, chairman of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee.
Final selections were based on a weighted scoring system across six key areas: leadership, respect within the team, cricketing knowledge, personal conduct, media and communication skills, and psychometric evaluation results. Chase and Warrican emerged as the top candidates and were subsequently recommended to, and approved by, the board.
CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow hailed the integrity and innovation of the process.
“This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken. I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket,” Shallow said.
Head coach Daren Sammy echoed that sentiment and voiced strong support for the new leadership duo.
“I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him — we’re building something special,” Sammy said.
CWI described the appointments as reflecting a “clear strategic direction for the Test team,” with a focus on reinforcing team culture and improving global competitiveness. The board also praised all candidates for their professionalism and sees the process as a model for future leadership selections across all formats.
Chase’s captaincy era begins with high expectations as the team prepares to face the formidable Australians in what promises to be a defining home series.
