Former Jamaican international footballer Jorginho James is scheduled to appear in a Texas court next month after being charged with violating his bail conditions, following an alleged assault on his wife, Crystal James, in August.
A video that surfaced on social media Wednesday shows a man striking a woman while a toddler looks on. The man then fled the scene. The individual in the video is alleged to be James, who made his debut for Jamaica’s national team at just 17 years old in 2012. The footballer has been grappling with legal troubles since earlier this year.
James initially appeared in Harris County District Court in March, facing a felony assault charge. Court records reveal that he was arrested on March 4 for “unlawfully, intentionally, and knowingly causing bodily injury to Crystal James, a family member, by restricting her breathing and blood circulation by applying pressure to her throat.”
After his arrest, James was released on a $7,500 bail, with the court requiring him to wear an ankle monitor. In July, he petitioned the court to remove the monitor, citing concerns from his employer, Pearland Soccer Club, where he worked as a youth development coach. The club provided a letter indicating that James’ employment was at risk if the ankle monitor remained in place for the start of the season.
The letter stated, “We’ve made adjustments during the off-season to allow you to continue your role in player development, but as the regular season approaches, you’ll be expected to interact with several players. We cannot make the same accommodations moving forward.” The club further indicated that James’ position would be terminated by July 24, 2024, if the monitor was not removed, though they would reconsider his reinstatement once the device was taken off.
The court granted his request for the removal of the monitor, but while out on bail, James was arrested again in August, charged with violating his bond conditions and facing a second felony assault charge after another alleged incident with his wife. This latest altercation, captured on video, led to a bail of $20,000.
James was released on bail earlier this week and now awaits his court date set for October 28.
James made his senior international debut for Jamaica on February 22, 2012, in a friendly against Cuba, where he scored just five minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 82nd minute. His promising football career has since been overshadowed by his legal troubles.
