The National Conference of Actors for New Governance (NCANG) in Haiti has requested Caribbean Community (Caricom) Secretary General Dr. Carla Barnett to establish a mediation and transfer of power committee amid efforts to remove Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime within 30 days. In a January 23 letter, NCANG, along with several civil society organizations, highlighted the worsening political and social crisis in Haiti, emphasizing the need for a Mediation Committee before the Presidential Transitional Council’s mandate expires on February 7, 2026.
The Caricom Eminent Persons Group (EPG) has stressed the urgency for consensus among Haitian stakeholders to avoid negative repercussions. Haiti has lacked an elected leader since President Jovenel Moise’s assassination in July 2021, leading to increased gang violence. Recently, a resolution to dismiss Fils-Aime gained support from five CPT members, but advisor Smith Augustin later opposed it. Despite warnings from the U.S. about potential consequences, CPT members Leslie Voltaire and Edgard Leblanc Fils announced plans to remove Fils-Aime within 30 days.
Fils-Aime, at a police event, asserted that neither criminals nor dissenters would dictate the law, while U.S. Charge d’Affaires Henry Wooster emphasized the importance of Fils-Aime’s leadership in combating gang violence.
