Gospel singer Kirk Franklin has said sorry for what some called a “disrespectful” outfit during his performance at the “Fun in the Son” concert last April in Jamaica. This yearly event, put together by Best Dressed Chicken, promotes Judeo-Christian values, which made his clothing choice a hot topic.
At the concert, Kirk showed up in a tank top and shorts. A lot of folks at the event were let down by what he wore, thinking it wasn’t right attire for such an important Christian gathering.
In a YouTube video he posted on Monday, Franklin shared his thoughts on what happened. He mentioned that he didn’t think his outfit would spark any negative comments. “I get it now that my outfit, which we thought would be okay, ended up coming off as disrespectful,” he explained.
Reflecting on His Journey
The 54-year-old artist talked about how crucial humility is in ministry. “I truly apologize because I never want to close myself off from learning and being humble enough to listen to people and their concerns,” Franklin said. He noted that his main goal is to share the message of Jesus and feels he missed the mark if his outfit took away from that.
The concert, which celebrated Best Dressed Chicken’s 65th anniversary, also featured performances from other big names, like Grammy winner Toby Mac and several local Christian artists.
Response from Jamaica Broilers Group
After the incident, Christopher Levy, the President and CEO of Jamaica Broilers Group, shared his disappointment over Franklin’s outfit choice. He pointed out that artists have a responsibility to understand their audience’s values. “We expected more from Mr. Franklin,” Levy noted, and stressed the need for understanding as individuals work through their connections with God.
Kirk Franklin’s apology highlights how important it is to make thoughtful choices in ministry and to pay attention to the community’s feelings. As he moves forward, Franklin is determined to keep sharing the message he believes in through his music.
