The Government of Guyana has announced plans to have a national funeral of honour in tribute to the life and legacy of Sir Shridath Surendranath “Sonny” Ramphal.
In making the announcement on Saturday, President Irfaan Ali said the funeral will be held here on September 14.
“Sir Shridath, a revered son of Guyana and former Commonwealth secretary general, is widely recognised as a towering figure in global diplomacy. He will be celebrated for his lifelong service to Guyana, the Caribbean, the Commonwealth, and the international community,” Ali said.
The ceremony will take place at Promenade Gardens in Georgetown, beginning at 3:00 pm.
Following the service, Sir Shridath will be interred at The Place of the Seven Ponds in the Botanical Gardens.
The national funeral will be marked by full ceremonial tributes to honour Sir Shridath’s monumental contributions, including his efforts in preserving Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and his impact on global affairs.
A statement from the Government said all Guyanese are invited to join in paying their final respects to “a man whose extraordinary vision and tireless dedication have left an enduring legacy both at home and abroad”.
