Reggae singer Jah Cure will remain incarcerated in the Netherlands, continuing to serve his six-year sentence for attempted manslaughter, following a ruling by a Dutch judge last week.
The “Love Is” singer, whose real name is Siccature Alcock, appeared in a pro forma hearing on August 21 as prosecutors seek to overturn his acquittal on the more serious charge of attempted murder.
Tuscha Essed, press officer for the Public Prosecution Service on appeal, provided an update on the case: “The process remains in the hands of the investigative judge, who is currently hearing witnesses. The next pro forma date is scheduled for November 12.”
Under Dutch law, inmates are required to attend pro forma hearings while awaiting a trial date, with a judge reviewing their incarceration status every 90 days to determine whether they should remain in custody.
Jah Cure was convicted in March 2022 of attempted manslaughter after stabbing a Dutch concert promoter in October 2021 over unpaid performance fees. The court ruled that his actions did not constitute premeditated attempted murder, leading to his acquittal on that charge. However, Dutch prosecutors appealed the acquittal, pushing for a retrial.
The artist, known for his hit songs “Longing For,” “Love Is,” “That Girl,” and “True Reflection (Behind These Prison Walls),” was remanded in January 2024, pending a new trial.
