Two rising stars in the NBA, twin brothers Amen and Ausar Thompson, are in the process of acquiring Jamaican citizenship, opening the door for them to represent Jamaica in future international basketball competitions.
The Jamaica Observer reports that the Thompson twins, both 22 years old, are seeking to play for Jamaica through their father, who is Jamaican. This move comes after Amen was named in the All-Defensive First Team for his outstanding performance with the Houston Rockets, while Ausar played a pivotal role in helping the Detroit Pistons reach the playoffs for the first time in six years.
If their citizenship process, which is expected to be a mere formality, is successful, the twins could potentially step onto the court to represent Jamaica in FIBA competitions and the Olympics, provided Jamaica qualifies.
This acquisition is seen as a significant boost for Jamaica’s basketball program, especially following the recent commitment of Los Angeles Clippers star Norman Powell, who has also pledged his support for the Jamaican national team.
Fans and basketball enthusiasts alike are excited about the possibility of the Thompson twins wearing the national colors. They are scheduled to participate in a meet and greet event this Sunday in Kingston, organized by the Jamaica Basketball Association in collaboration with the Bob Marley Foundation.
As the excitement builds, many are hopeful that this move will inspire a new generation of basketball talent in Jamaica.
